Oh, the noble Duke of York He had ten thousand men He marched them up to the top of the hill and Marched them down again
July 2nd Day Ten
Highlights of the Day!
Items listed in blue are things we did with the group. Visit to Hadrian's Wall Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum Group walk through York and Indian dinner
Vindolanda
This museum was packed with artifacts and information about the Roman fort that was located here. Outside, we found the archaeological dig very interesting. We were hoping they would make some exciting discovery while we watched, but apparently a watched dig doesn't produce artifacts.
Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian's Wall
I didn't know about Hadrian's Wall before researching for this trip. Somehow my education had skipped over this amazing part of history. I still find it hard to understanding that in AD 122 there were Romans building this same wall that I can see today. Tom and Louise found several spots for us to stop and gaze at the wall.
Not too many places can celebrate their 1800th anniversary!
Our first glimpse of York was in the rain, so we didn't explore too much the first night.
July 3rd Day Eleven
Highlights of the Day!
Items listed in blue are things we did with the group. Happy Birthday Donna! Tour of York Minster Shopping on the cute streets of York Afternoon Tea at Betty's York Castle Museum York Chocolate Museum Walk around the city wall Dinner at McDonald's Stroll back to hotel
York Minster
During our tour of the York Minster there was a rehearsal for a school program going on. So every few moments the organ would blast out the beginning of a processional. The poor guide had a hard time competing with the sound. However, most of us in the group loved being able to hear the beautiful music in the amazing setting of the church.
Our Free Afternoon...
Bettys Café
Yummy!
Tea at Bettys was very fun. We went to the location on Stonegate which was very cute and charming! Get there early, or be prepared to stand in a long line!
York Castle Museum
History in a fun way!
The York Castle Museum was perfect for our trio. Educational, but fun stuff to look at for the teenager!
Chocolate: York's Sweet Story
Chocolate Lollys
This was a fabulous tour. We learned the history of chocolate in York and loved the Harry-Potter-like talking pictures. Then we tasted lots of samples and made our own chocolate lolly!
Walk Around The City
We enjoyed strolling around the streets of York. We shopped along the Shambles, which looks like it came straight out of a Harry Potter film. Then we enjoyed the views from the walls and looking down into the city.
Shhhhh!
OK! We admit it, we went to McDonald's. Once each trip we usually make a stop to the golden arches. We think of it as research as they do have different things on the menus. Rebecca is a great sport about trying new foods on the trips, but sometimes it is nice to have a taste of home.
